Mia Hughes, a Senior Fellow at the Macdonald Laurier Institute and Director of Genspect Canada, joined me today to discuss her journey from a left-leaning, stay-at-home mother to a prominent critic of pediatric gender medicine. Triggered by JK Rowling’s 2019 tweet and the backlash labeling dissenters as “TERFs,” Mia researched the rapid medicalization of youth via puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries, driven by weak evidence and social contagion. She explains the phenomenon through the psychiatric lens of “extreme overvalued beliefs”—a shared, cherished false conviction (that some people are “trans” and require body alteration) reinforced by cultural celebration, legal protections, media silence, and institutional capture, including WPATH’s activist-driven echo chamber. Mia highlights how this mass delusion affects vulnerable youth (often with autism, trauma, same-sex attraction, or puberty distress), contrasts it with true delusions or obsessions, and calls for a “contagion of courage” to challenge the ideology, reform laws, and prioritize evidence-based care over affirmation.
